13 miles on the Santee River

July 30, 2022 Upper Santee River trip

In spite of the very high temperatures predicted for today 4 LCP members launched from the landing beneath the Route 52 bridge which spans the Santee River just passed the Rediversion canal. We paddled 13 miles and took out at Arrowhead-landing in St Stephen’s.

We took our time to enjoy the day. Lucky for us a nice breeze followed us down the river.

We ate lunch on a shady island and floated in the water before taking off again. We stopped along the way for occasional swim breaks too.

We saw the usual low country birds but we were also treated to Swallow Tail Kites soaring overhead and gliding low over the river to grab an insect meal. Beautiful to watch.

The water was clear enough to see good size fish darting under our kayaks and spotting black and speckled Gar as we slipped along.

A nice day on the water…. I think you would have enjoyed!
