Otter Island paddle description update
Dan Hoke

Hi,

Let me give out a better description of this paddle. What we generically call Otter Island is actually two islands, located across the Edisto River. from the town of Edisto Beach. It's the tear-dropped shaped bit of land and marsh if your looking on a map. Otter I is to the west of Jefford Ck and Pine I is on the eastern side. To actually circumnavigate Otter Island is a long day on the water, though it is a fascinating paddle. My plan for the day is to do a circumnavigation of Pine Island. We'll launch from the LCP member Lindsey Young's/Edisto Watersports dock and paddle up the Edisto River with the incoming tide. At the top of the island we'll have an option to get in a swim before crossing over to Jefford Creek for the paddle down the island, this time with the outgoing tide. We will be stopping for at least an hour on the beach at the lower end before crossing the Edisto River back to town. The only place on this paddle where we'll hit any rough water is the return paddle across the Edisto. It is big water and we might hit a 1-2' breaking wave as we start the crossing. Otherwise if it's a normal day wind-wise this is not a tough paddle. It is rated a level 3 due to the big water crossing.

Hi!
I have a house on Edisto Beach and have done Otter Island quite a few times. When exiting Jefford Creek into the Edisto, head towards the Edisto water tower. This avoids the dodgy sandbars. If it's too gnarly, I tuck up against Pine Island and drag my kayak over the sandbar. Also there are a lot of stingrays there, so be careful wading.
I will be joining y'all obviously! Looking forward to it!

Kind Regards
