Go, no-go for this sunday’s Aug 11 Ashley River tr...
Rick Cone

Due to this week’s ongoing excessive rain and its resulting large volume of upper headwaters/wetlands rain runoff that directly affect the upper Ashey tides and currents, I’ll evaluate this on saturday and will publish a go or no-go decision for sundays 2pm Ashley River trip. So stay tuned!

That will be a dangerous trip with all the excess water in that area.

Hi Rick:
I was looking forward to this trip although I hadn’t signed up yet due to concerns about the weather. There is a Facebook post about the conditions at Jessen landing- as of yesterday there is no way you would want to kayak on the Ashley. I’m not sure how to send you the link- I will try to message it to the Low Country Paddlers page.
I live within walking distance of Schultz Lake- the headwaters of the Ashley. I’m going to head down there Saturday and video what the lake looks like. I’m assuming it will look like a river.

As promised, I went to check Jessen landing today (I know the trip was cancelled but I’m curious). You cannot even get to the parking lot of the landing because the road to the parking lot is underwater.  This photo was taken around high tide so I imagine it will go out some. Good call for cancelling, Rick.

I tried to tell you it’s crested at 17 feet.  It’s normally 5
Feet

Anybody wanna come paddle around my basement?  Rare opportunity!

We're down 4 inches from the crest.  It was at the yellow band on PVC gauge all yesterday.  23.05 on the Stokes Bridge gauge at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/02174055/#parameterCode=00065&period=P7D&showMedian=false

I'm safe here.  Never lost power, internet or AC.

I do have to paddle to get to my car.  Is there some sort of ACA qual for flood paddling?

Best to all,
Walter

Thanks for posting the video. Yikes.

Boat launch at Ashley River Park today.

On an unrelated river note, the Edisto River is supposed to reach major flood stage on Saturday, and Dorchester County Sheriffs office sent out deputies to notify residents of imminent flooding. (That may be old news to most of you-I’ve been busy watching Jim Cantore in Charleston. )

Not sure if the boat launch photo went through.  Sorry if you are getting it twice.

Got it
Thanks Ralph

SUNDAY AUGUST 11 ASHLEY RIVER PADDLE TRIP IS CANCELLED.

Based on NOAA's current predictions (as of today) that our local tidal rivers will not be cresting until at least Aug 19, with Bacon's Bridge tidal station #8664531 clearly showing this trend...(as well as Allison's local pics/vids!!), this sunday's Aug 11 paddle is CANCELLED.

Tara Harney
Wise decision. The outflow will be much stronger than the tide so you would have been paddling against a strong outgoing current to get from Herbert Jessen to Bacons Bridge. My guess is that the parking lot at Herbert Jessen is underwater

Good decision but I want to go kayaking. Boo hoo.  Thanks again for the video, Allison!
